Principle behind two-substance nozzles

Significantly more flexible than single-substance nozzles in a wide range of application areas

Two-substance nozzles – which are also referred to as ‘pneumatic atomizers’ – rely on a second medium (compressed air, gas or steam) to supply the energy required for atomization.  Media such as compressed air, gas or steam can reach extremely high speeds even when the pressure differences involved are relatively low – sometimes even matching or exceeding the speed of sound. Two-substance nozzles work by exploiting this phenomenon.  The flow speed of the second medium breaks the liquid down into fine droplets. Consequently, the liquid that is being atomized only has to travel at a relatively low flow speed itself. This results in very fine atomization even in the case of highly viscous liquids or suspensions.  Within certain limits, some two-substance nozzles can also act as injectors.

Professional industrial spraying is becoming increasingly important. The rising costs of energy or raw materials are not the only factors here. Higher quality requirements also stimulate demand for alternative processes and new options. This is why SCHLICK has developed a new air cap and have applied for a patent.

SCHLICK has the following exactly defined requirements:

  • Maximum scatter cone width and area coverage
  • Minimal droplet diameter with limited use of an atomisation medium in order to save energy
  • Even speed distribution with limited penetrating power of the scatter cone
  • Even distribution of liquid
  • Unhindered use of the nozzle with high viscosities and high solid contents
